Ever popular, we take a few minutes to look at just why the crank operated blind is a stalwart for Facilities Managers in the education sector.
Crank operated blinds are one of our most popular systems for schools and colleges, particularly those with younger pupils. This is because they offer precision and are easy to use, without the need for cords and chains that could post a safety risk.
Crank operated blinds are suitable for both large areas and small windows, enabling privacy, and protection from the sun’s harmful rays when needed. They are also a very neat and tidy solution flexible too. The crank handle may be located on either side of the blind.
When it comes to usage, crank operation is robust and so regular and repeated usage is not an issue. The operation is quick and straightforward; a gear box is hidden away on one end at the top of the blind and then the user simply inserts the handle and twists! In many instances the handle is removable – a firm favourite – particularly with teachers – as this ensures that the blinds aren’t open or closes without prior authorization and minimises any distraction or disturbance.
In 2009, the British Blinds and Shutter Association (BBSA) launched it’s ‘Make it Safe’ campaign which aims to raise awareness for safer blinds within the home but also in public buildings such as schools and community areas. Crank operated blinds are the recommended solution, but if cord or chain blinds are in use, guidelines for cord lengths and anti-ligature features are given.
