Construction of the new £33m UHW Lakeside Wing, Cardiff is underway by modular construction specialist, Darwin Group.

The purpose of the wing is to ensure sufficient capacity for patients should a second spike in Covid-19 cases occur.  The build follows the decommissioning of the Nightingale Hospital currently located within the Principality Stadium in the heart of Cardiff.

Located in the Lakeside area, the building will be temporary and modular with the Northern wing due for completion within the next few weeks. Full completion with the hand over of keys is expected at the end of January 2021.

This surge facility will accommodate 400 patients, supporting the 200 beds that are already available across the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board’s sites as laid down by the Welsh Government’s COVID-19 requirements.

Swanmac will be onsite during January 2021 to install bed rails and curtains for 350-bed spaces to ensure essential patient privacy and safety.
